Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes With Whole Grains
Published in Paperback by HJ Kramer (June, 1990)
Authors: Joanne Saltzman and Jay Harlow
Average review score:

Amazing Grains! Amazing Recipes! Amazing Directions!
I never knew there were so many different types of grains, or different ways to prepare them. This book is facinating reading. Not only does Joanne explain the characteristics of different grains, but also the different types of cooking liquids, salt seasonings, oils, vegetables, herbs and spices that make up a dish, and (very helpful) how substituting other ingredients can vary the dish. My favorite recipe is "Oats, Onions, and Thyme". It uses steel-cut oats, and is a delightful change of pace from rice.

I also recommend her other book "Romancing The Bean"

Amber the Golden Gem of the Ages
Published in Paperback by Kosciuszko Foundation (March, 1994)
Author: Patty C. Rice
Average review score:

A treasure-trove of a book about amber!
Patty C. Rice brings a passionate love for her subject to this wonderful book. She offers a very comprehensive study of this beloved gemstone, from a detailed account of its long history, to the folklore surrounding it, to a thorough study of its scientific properties. She explores the many sources of amber worldwide, and gives an exhaustive study of the amazing variety of amber. Most helpful to a collector, she explains in detail how genuine amber differs from its imitations, and how you can perform simple tests to determine if yours is authentic. The mechanics of working with amber as a lapidary or jewelry- maker are also discussed. I loved the wealth of gorgeous photos, many of them from Dr. Rice's own impressive personal collection from all over the world. Her book does full justice to the beauty and enduring fascination of amber, and if you love it as much as I do, her book is a must-have.

America's Greatest Game: The Real Story of Football and the NFL
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Press (September, 1998)
Authors: James, Jr. Buckley and Jerry Rice
Average review score:

This informative, entertaining book on football is a keeper.
It is rare, and in this case, medium rare, that a youth market book hits the target so perfectly as does "America's Greatest Game". From the dazzling cover illustration to the last page, this brilliantly designed and intelligently written book for kids provides an insightful, original look at the NFL and football. The content is well-organized, the layouts are reader-friendly, and the action photography is the best in the world. Of course, one would expect nothing less than the best from the legends at NFL Properties Publishing Group in L.A., creators of the industry's best football books and magazines. Previous NFLP titles include "75 Seasons" and "Football America"--more evidence of their hard-earned reputation for publishing excellence. This information-packed, entertaining book belongs on the shelf of every kid, boy or girl, who ever wondered about real story behind the NFL, and how the game of football has grown to become America's greatest game.

The weaver of this book has a heart full of golden threads. Thank you Paul for this sharing.

As Dead As a Dodo
Published in Hardcover by David R Godine (October, 1981)
Author: Paul Rice
Average review score:

A beautiful but sad lesson in wildlife conservation
This book provides brief descriptions of about a dozen extinct species like the dodo, the passenger pigeon, the Cuban red macaw, the huia, the Hawaiian Oo, the blaubok and the Tasmanian wolf. The authors then give the details of what brought about each species' extinction. The most remarkable aspect of this book is the illustrations. This book features a full-page, museum-worthy painting of each animal described. Reading this book to a young child is a moving experience. My six year-old turned his face away and cried when he realized he could never see the tiny red macaw or the blue deer because these animals are gone forever. It was a sad lesson in respecting wildlife.

Neglected Masterpiece
This children's book has to be my all time favorite children's book. I was given the book in elementary school by the Illustrator--Linda Shute. This book makes for a wonderful bedtime story. It will spur your child's imagination, as it does to me every time! It is truly amazing to think about what is happening "At this very moment" all across the world. This book is sadly out of print, but it is worth your while to obtain a used copy.
